I have fallen in love with BONE, a comic series by Jeff Smith.
In the past, I kinda skipped over it because I’m not really a fan of the “cutesy Disney” subgenre but the fact that this is one of the most lauded works of graphic fiction of all time told me to give it a read.  I haven’t looked back… it’s as good as people say and better.
It’s an epic fantasy story, easily on par with Lord of the Rings in terms of size and scope and characterization.  Also, it’s genuinely funny.  If you read it, you will laugh, I guarantee.  More than anything, it’s a very sweet and gentle story that has a kind heart as big as any of its very big action sequences, and that’s a true rarity in fiction of any medium these days.
I recommend BONE if A) you have a soul and B) you have the ability to read.

Bone is a masterpiece.
Another is Usagi Yojimbo by Stan Sakai.  It’s the story of a ronin in 17th century Japan.  The characters are anthropomorphic (animals as human).  Sakai provides great detail about the culture and history of this period in Japan.  Like Bone, it appeals to both adults and children.
In Jeff Smith (Bone) and Stan Sakai you have two masters of the craft.  They are exceptional artists and storytellers.  Unlike many artists, they will rarely, if ever, produce a confusing panel or sequence of panels.  Brilliant stuff.
